Operation Safe Stop
October 20-24, 2025
• For the week of October 20-24, 2025, Tuscola Intermediate School District is participating in Operation Safe Stop. We are sending a zero-tolerance message to the public: illegally passing a school bus on America’s roadways will result in a ticket. Red means STOP!
• During a one-day survey conducted by 2,013 Michigan school bus drivers in May 2025, drivers reported 2,207 times a motorist passed a school bus illegally. Red means STOP!
• School buses are the safest way for children to get to school. Their design is meant to be safer than any passenger vehicle in avoiding crashes and preventing injuries. Treat the flashing lights of a school bus like a traffic signal. Red means STOP!
• Drivers who pass stopped school buses may be charged with civil infractions carrying a fine up to $500. Red means STOP!
• In Michigan in 2024, there were 1,044 crashes involving school buses, 54 of those happened at the bus stops. From the 54 bus stop crashes, there was one fatality, but not on a school bus, and there were 26 injuries. If the bus lights are flashing red – STOP! Red means STOP!
• In Michigan in 2024, October was the month with the most school-bus-related crashes (153). That is why Operation Safe Stop is out all week – helping keep students safe on their way to and from school. Red means STOP!
• In a normal year, 500,000 buses nationwide take 26 million students to and from school each day. School + field trips + sports and more means buses log 10 billion miles traveled every year. See the red flashing lights of a bus? Stop! Red means STOP!
• School-bus-involved crashes increased 6% from 2023 (988) to 2024 (1,044). Help us decrease crashes. Red Means STOP!
